New York, NY

NYC Health + Hospitals’ NYC Care program today held a Black History celebration at NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln which featured a resource fair with tabling from government and non-profit partners and an array of performances from local community artists, including the Addiction Recovery Choir (ARC) Gospel Choir. Special guests included faith leaders, consular officials, elected and appointed City leaders, and community leaders. The event is part of a broad, citywide outreach effort by NYC Care to enroll eligible New Yorkers in the program and encourage them to make a primary care appointment. Launched in 2019, NYC Care has more than 100,000 active members. After six months of enrollment, 53% of enrollees with diabetes had improved hemoglobin A1C, and 40% of enrollees with hypertension had improved blood pressure. NYC Care’s Executive Director, Dr. Jonathan Jiménez, gave remarks on behalf of the program, and was joined by NYC Mayor Eric Adams, Bronx Borough President Vanessa L. Gibson, NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln CEO Christopher Roker, NYC Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs Commissioner Manuel Castro, and NYC Mayor’s Office for International Affairs Commissioner Edward Mermelstein.

“Black History Month is a time for reflection, recognition, and action,” said Anne Williams-Isom, Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services. “That all came together with this event at NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln to extend the reach of the NYC Care program that serves more than 100,000 people across the city.  I encourage every person and family that may be eligible for the program to connect with H+H to see if these services can help you secure health care for you and your family.  Thank you to H+H, MOIA, International Affairs, and every person engaged in this work in the Bronx and in every borough across the city.”

“I am thrilled to join NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln, the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs, and our numerous community and government partners to celebrate Black History. We could not dream of NYC Care or the right to health care regardless of race or country of origin without all the Black Americans, including Black immigrants, who struggled for freedom and justice. We stand on the shoulders of giants.,” said Dr. Jonathan Jiménez, Executive Director of NYC Care from NYC Health + Hospitals

“This Black History Month, we honor the sacrifice of civil rights leaders who fought for the rights not just of the black community but of all Americans. Their fight for civil rights was about human rights, and human rights are immigrant rights. The fight for justice is not over, however. That is why we are proud to join NYC Health + Hospitals and partners across our city to ensure health care is accessible to all our communities regardless of their skin color or immigration status,” said Manuel Castro, Commissioner of the NYC Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs. “We’re honored to partner with NYC Care and The Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs to host this Black History Celebration. Our community is growing and we’re here to support the growth. This partnership showcases everyone’s commitment to our current New Yorkers and our newest New Yorkers. We welcome you and we’re pleased to present available resources, showcase local talent and highlight the work and commitment of our respected public servant, Commissioner Gary Jenkins,” said Christopher Roker, NYC Health + Hospitals Chief Growth Officer and Lincoln CEO.
